The train "Lake Zurich" terminated in the City of Zurich, which gave it its name. With the timetable change in May 1987, the European Railways introduced the new train category "EuroCity". These were international train connections that had to fulfil specific quality criteria regarding travel time and rolling stock. The express train "Zürichsee" became the Eurocity "Maria Theresia" due to the changeover.
