Early on, an alternative, low-cost and weather-resistant alternative to wooden sleepers was sought. With concrete sleepers very good experiences were collected and so concrete sleepers, partly in combination with wooden and steel sleepers, were quickly found on many types of track. In modern railway concrete sleepers are the standard.
