In the period 1978-1985, DSB was delivered a total of 97 modern diesel-hydraulic two-car train sets, which in everyday speech came to be called "MR train".
The train sets were designed based on BR 628 from DB, and the first 15 sets were therefore built in Germany, while Scandia in Randers delivered the subsequent 82 sets.
The MR trains were initially delivered as MR-MR, e.g. MR 4001-MR 4002 were permanently coupled as a train set. But from 1981 the deliveries of MRD began, so the train sets then consisted of MR-MRD, e.g. MR 4001-MRD 4201. The MRD carriages have double entry doors and a changed layout compared to MR.
The new trains were initially used on the side tracks in Jutland and on Funen, where they replaced the MO carriages. The introduction of the MR trains meant that it became possible to introduce hourly operation on most Jutland sideways.
In the early nineties, the MR trains were also deployed on Lille Syd between Roskilde and Næstved, and for a period in the last half of the eighties, they also ran the boat train "Englænderen" between Copenhagen H and Esbjerg Harbor and back. In this connection, the 8 newest train sets were rebuilt, so they got a number of seats in 1st class, with an accompanying yellow stripe on the outside!
All the train sets were rebuilt in the mid - nineties in Germany. The most visible changes were that the train sets were now no longer red, but instead white with red doors like the IC3 and ER4 equipment (MF and ER), and that the rear entry doors in the MRD carriages were now blinded.
In 2002-2006, a large part of the MR trains were repainted in the new Via design, in which the remaining train sets continue to appear. However, the original light green door markings have now been replaced with corresponding reds.
From 2003 and some years onwards, a number of train sets were leased to Arriva, and thus completely or partially repainted in Arriva's beige and turquoise colors.
The MR trains are now all over 30 years old, but they are still used in several places in the country, including at Lille Syd, Aalborg Nærbane and between Fredericia and Struer. And they are also regularly used in IC or light rail in Jutland when there is a lack of either MF or MG equipment.
And finally, it should be mentioned that a number of MR trains today run in Poland under the auspices of Arriva.
The models
Undercarriage and car body of metal, resilient buffers, etched gratings, wipers, front brackets etc.
Richly detailed model, with i.a. cab and passenger compartment fittings. All models are delivered with open and closed plow, as well as articulated screw coupling that can be mounted as desired.
The model is equipped with electronics developed in collaboration with ESU, and has i.a. headlights and tail lights, individual headlamps and passenger compartment lights, working brake indicators at the bogies, and headlamps.
The train set pulls on all four axles on the MR, MRD basically only functions as a carriage.
The kit comes with MR and MRD separated, as the devices can be easily assembled and disassembled, by clicking the 10-pole live coupling together, or pulling it apart.
This connector provides power for all light and sound functions in the MRD.
All train sets are delivered with ESU decoder and powerpack, and can also be delivered with sound incl. curve sound.
Thoroughly tested, powerful and quiet 5 pole motor.
Variants, numbers and status
The first MR-MR trains were delivered with skirts and thus without suspended plows. But after the winter of 1979/80, DSB began to mount suspended plows on all traction, and thus also on the MR trains.
The MR and MRD wagons that were subsequently delivered were delivered with suspended plows, here among all MRD wagons.
All the six train sets that are made in the first instance are made as MR-MRD and with suspended plows.
They thus cover the period approx. from the turn of the year 1981/82 onwards.
