Due to the increase in traffic, the continuing strong international competition and the opening of the Gotthard Basis Tunnel, the SBB considered buying even more multiple-current-system locomotives. Given the positive experiences with the multiple-current-system locomotives from Siemens in the domestic traffic, the SBB launched a tender on the market and later leased 18 Vectron locomotives on a long-term basis.
